Supervisory Pharmacy Technician

Professional, technical, and administrative supervision of the distribution, clinical, consultative, teaching, and research functions within the Outpatient Pharmacy Section. Furnishes administrative and technical supervision to the pharmacy technicians, pharmacy aides, students, residents, and other supportive personnel assigned to the Outpatient Section; Schedules workload and integrates the work of the outpatient area with the overall pharmacy program; Incumbent is responsible for supervising the day to day activities, making schedules, assigning holidays, and assuring coverage of the outpatient pharmacy technician staff and technician trainees; He/she plans, schedules, distributes and revises work assignments in accordance with established routine and urgent procedures; FILLING/DISPENSING:
Incumbent is a working supervisor and works with the outpatient technician staff routinely so that patient care will be facilitated, to include:
(a) Accurately fills prescriptions by selecting, packaging, and labeling the correct and proper drug/supply, dosage, and quantity. Dispenses prescriptions at the pharmacy window. Documents all quality assurance information in the dispensing record. Utilizes knowledge of automated devices, quality assurance requirements, and team approach to fill prescriptions in accordance with the facility's customer service standards; (b) Accurately fills nursing home orders and bubble packs medications. (c) Utilizes knowledge of computer system, printer operation, pre-packing or automated dispensing equipment, and tablet counters; (d) Maintains inventory by coordinating monthly expiration checks and reviews expired/expiring meds for inventory adjustments; (e) Accurately triages Community Care Prescriptions using 3rd party web portals, VISTA, and CPRS, and prepares them for pharmacist processing. Evaluates, analyzes and implements work simplification techniques (workflow) and makes changes in the daily operations to retain a consistent and smooth operation to ensure that present and anticipated workload of the Pharmacy is processed in a timely and cost-effective manner; Incumbent works with the Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor to recommend changes in established work practices that affect Pharmacy Service and other departments in the medical center who interact with Pharmacy; Extensive experience in pharmacy procedures and broad knowledge of the many and various aspects of the total pharmacy operation. Lecturing and teaching both verbally and by example. Maintains ward stock and pyxis inventories. Conducts and documents monthly ward inspections and monitors for expiration dates of all stock; SUPPLY/INVENTORY:
Reports shortages and out-of-stock conditions as they are discovered. Inspects pharmacy stock for expiration dates. Replaces barcode scanner tags for individual products as necessary and utilizes the barcode scanner device to prepare orders for purchasing agents, when and where necessary. Prepares and dispenses items which were on order or in pending status. Inventories stock and supplies needed for pre-packaging and prepares orders for procurement. Uses electronic mail and other means of communication daily to report problems and concerns during the performance of duties. Works with colleagues in a professional and courteous manner and as a team to accomplish the goals and missions of Pharmacy Service. Serves as a mentor for pharmacy technicians and students rotating through the pharmacy area. Responsible for protecting sensitive electronic data from unauthorized loss, alteration, or release. Must follow regulations for security of individual computer access code. Ancillary duties may include access to Automated Data Processing Applications Coordinator (ADPAC) privileges. Incumbent is responsible for the completion of the environmental aspect/impact analysis in collaboration with the GEMS Coordinator, for effective implementation of the operational strategies developed through the GEMS program to ensure regulatory compliance, and for improving environmental performance within his/her area. Also, shall consider environmentally preferable and recycled products in all purchasing decisions. PATIENT SAFETY:
The incumbent will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events including the reporting of events resulting in actual or potential injury to a patient. Incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients. Work Schedule:

Not required To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement (08/31/2020). Basic Requirements:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. Physical Requirements. Must successfully complete all Pre-Placement Physical requirements in accordance with VA regulations and policy. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 38 USC 7407(d). Grade Determinations. In addition to the basic requirements for employment listed above, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:
a. Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the technical KSAs listed below and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk ( ). b. Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above. c. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) in your application documents (may be documented in Question and Answer format on separate sheet of paper):
Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management. References:

Applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. The work requires sitting, walking, standing, bending and stooping, pulling and pushing, and lifting/carrying items up to 50 lbs. Must also maintain self control in difficult stressful situations.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
